Farr 740 Sport Class Rules

The objects of these restrictions and rules are to establish, control and maintain the FARR 740 SP0RT Trailer Yacht as a One Design Class. They aim to ensure that racing depends on the skill of the crew.

The Farr 740 Sport Trailer Yacht Class Restrictions and Rules

1. GENERAL

1.1. To promote the objects of these restrictions and rules and to establish a class of boat which is one design in all matters which effect performance. The rules shall be interpreted in this spirit.

1.2. Tolerances in measurement are laid down only to cover unintentional variations in building and changes in shape through age or use. The exploitation of these tolerances shall not be permitted.

1.3. The FARR 740 SPORT must be built from the official moulds of Bruce Farr Design No.101 and must be sold only by the manufacturer in a complete sail away form or with sufficient kitset details and materials to enable the purchaser to complete to sail away form, which complies with these restrictions and rules.

1.4. The FARR 740 SPORT must be maintained in the same form as when completed by the manufacturer in regard to deck layout, mast, rigging, sails and general equipment. As a general principal any extra fittings or changes from standard shall not be permitted unless specifically detailed in these rules.

1.5. The manufacturer shall not alter the specifications of Bruce Farr Design No 101 without consultation with the Farr Owners Association.


2. HULL

2.1. All hulls must be produced from the official moulds of Bruce Farr Design No. 101.

2.2. The Length Overall shall be: 7.370m (±12mm).

2.3. The Maximum Beam shall be: 2.500m (± 12mm).

2.4. Construction shall be glass reinforced plastic to the manufacturers specifications.


3. DECKS

3.1. All decks must be produced from the official moulds of Bruce Farr Design No. 101.


4. INTERIOR LINERS

4.1. All interior liners must be produced from the official moulds of Bruce Farr Design No. 101.


5. CABIN

5.1. Cabin layout must be per the manufacturers specifications.


6. FLOTATION

6.1. Polyurethane – P.V.C. Foam must be maintained as supplied by the manufacturer.


7. BALLAST

7.1. No ballast shall be removed from the hull or keel.

7.2. The lifting keel must be attached to the hull in accordance with the designer’s specification.

7.3. No additional movable ballast other than standard equipment, safety gear and crew shall be permitted.


8. RUDDER

8.1. The rudder stock shall be made of aluminium or stainless steel and the blade of fibreglass. The rudder must be to the designer’s specifications.

An alternative rudder design may be used as per the specifications in Appendix 2


9. SAFETY EQUIPMENT

9.1. All boats must carry safety equipment in accordance with the New Zealand Trailer Yacht Association’s Safety Specifications unless otherwise specified in these rules.


10. ANCHORS AND WARPS

10.1 Each yacht shall carry ready to use in a readily accessible stowage one anchor and warp as follows:

i. Anchor – A Danforth 13s, C.Q.R. 8.2kg or, if of patterns other than these an anchor of equivalent holding power.

ii. Warps – Warps must include a minimum of 7.4 metres of 6mm diameter galvanised short linked chain. The total length of the warp shall be a minimum of 46 metres and must have a breaking strain of not less than 1360kgs and should be of synthetic fibre.


11. GENERAL

11.1 Whilst racing all boats shall carry the pop top in a closed position at all times.

11.2 Whilst racing all boats shall have on board the main entrance panel. The exception shall be when racing inshore around buoys and marks under the supervision of a recognised Club or Squadron the main entrance panel may be replaced by the plastic panel.


12. SQUABS

12.1 All bunk squabs shall be of a minimum thickness of 50mm foam and must be carried in their normal position while racing.


13. MAST AND RIGGING

13.1 The mast shall be of an aluminium extrusion manufactured to the designer’s specifications. The mast and rigging shall be maintained as supplied by the manufacturer. Checkstays may be added in which case they shall join the mast 4120mm (+/- 12mm) above the deck.

13.2 Any replacement rigging shall comply with the following minimum requirements, and shall be of stainless steel wire:

a) Upper Sidestays 4mm diameter 1/19

b) Intermediate Sidestays 3mm diameter 1/19

c) Lower Sidestays 5mm diameter 1/19

d) Running Backstays 3mm diameter 1/19

e) Checkstays 2mm diameter 1/19

f) Topmast Backstay 2mm diameter 1/19

g) Forestay 4mm diameter 1/19

13.3 Removal of Running Back Stays

The sidestay chainplates may be moved from the original position 375mm (+/- 25mm) back to allow the removal of the backstays. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that suitable hull strengthening is carried out


14. BOOM

14.1 The main boom shall be of aluminium extrusion manufactured to the designer’s specifications. The main boom shall be maintained as supplied by the manufacturer.

15. MAINSAIL, JIB, AND SPINNAKER

15.1 All sails shall be manufactured from the Sail Plan of Bruce Farr Design No. 101 and must comply with the measurements and specifications detailed in Appendix. 1.

15.2 Foresails may be constructed for use with a Headfoil, Kayzee or similar system to the owner’s choice.

15.3 Sails will be restricted as follows:

1 x Mainsail

2 x Genoas

1 x Jib

1 x Storm Jib

3 x Spinnakers

15.4 The Class Sail Insignia must be displayed on the mainsail.

15.5 At least one reefing line must be attached to the leech at all times.

15.6 An alternative jib may be used in place of the standard jib and must comply with the measurements and specifications detailed in Appendix 1


16. DECK, HARDWARE AND EQUIPMENT

16.1 Layout of the deck fitting shall be maintained as per the Designer’s specifications.

16.2 Only four winches shall be permitted. The starboard cabin-top winch may be a two-speed winch.

16.3 The boom vang adjustment line may be laid aft and may be double-ended.


17. SPINNAKER POLE

17.1 For events where a restriction limiting the use of spinnakers to the No. 2 or No. 3 the maximum length of the spinnaker pole shall be 2450mm (+/- 12mm) measured from the face of the mast to the outer end of the pole and fittings, when the pole is supported horizontally from it’s mast fitting, and held athwart the fore and aft centreline of the yacht. Where the use of the No. 1 spinnaker is permitted the maximum length of the spinnaker pole shall be 3000mm (+/- 12mm) using the same measuring procedure as above.

17.2 The spinnaker pole(s) shall be a minimum of 50.8mm x 2.03mm aluminium tube.


18. CREW

18.1 The minimum number of crew when racing shall be three people, unless otherwise specified in the sailing instructions.


19. AUXILIARY POWER

19.1 Motor rating must be a minimum of 6hp.


20. SAIL ADJUSTMENTS

20.1 In order to encourage best possible boat speed additional devices may be employed to control sail shape. However, where used these must incorporate the original deck, mast or boom fitting of which it supplements.


21. ADVICE OF CHANGES

21.1 In order to encourage close competition amongst FARR 740 SPORT Trailer Yachts, where changes permitted under these rules have been made to the standard boat the owner is required to advise the Farr Owners Association of such changes at least one month prior to a Farr Owners organised event or any Regional or National Trailer Yacht or J.O.G. event. Such changes will be circulated to other owners.


22. MANUFACTURER

22.1 Where the word ‘Manufacturer’ is used in these rules it shall refer to the manufacturer of the hull and decks of Bruce Farr Design NO. 101 and not to the manufacturers of any individual component of the design.


23. COMPLIANCE

23.1 Any boat built and sailing as of 24th April 1983 shall be able to continue using current equipment as of that date, but any replacement shall conform to these rules.


APPENDIX 1

FARR 740 SPORT SAIL RESTRICTIONS

Mains and headsails shall be stretched out to remove wrinkles from edges when measuring.

The following shall be the various maximum and minimum dimensions of the FARR 740 SPORT sails.

The top batten pocket shall not exceed 1030mm in length, measured along the top of the pocket.

The batten pockets and reef positions shall be positioned as shown on the sail plan.

For measurement spinnakers shall be stretched out to remove wrinkles.

All measurement procedures shall comply with the JOG(A) methods, MGM shall be obtained by folding the head to the clew, then MGU shall be obtained by folding the head back to the leech at the MGM fold.

Where a Headfoil type system is used the width of the foil shall be deducted from the Maximum and Minimum L.P. measurements above.
