Farr 740 Rep appointed in South Aust

Mike O'Reilly (F740, Oh Really!) has been appointed as Farr 740 Sport  Class Representative with the Farr Association of SA - to assess the potential for bringing current F740's together to form a valid class for the State Titles - and the National Titles when it comes to that.

Mike says:
"With the popularity of the 740 increasing in SA - 5 known as regular open fleet race performers plus one hybrid (740  hull & 7500 deck) about to hit the water in SA, we believe the time has come to establish "the basics" of a Year 2002 F740 Sport ,  and what is required to enable them to compete under some form of universal measurement and yardstick.  We suspect the dynamics of the JOG background of many F740's has led to a diminishing of the "One Design" elements
that make the Farr classes so popular.  Obvious items such as the movement to swept back spreaders replacing running backstays will need to be analysed, also some differences in interior layouts. "

New Web Site

If you are reading this you will be aware that we have moved our website to farrtraileryachts.org. Over a year and a half period on our Yahoo Geocities site the banner ads grew to take up half the screen and we were being frequently timed out for having too much traffic. Now we have no traffic limits and no one elses ads (Appropriate sponsers welcome!)

World Firefighter Games

Christchurch will be host to the World Firefighters Games in August this year. The games are held every two years, most recently in Mantes, France in July 2000. Those games attracted 4000 competitors from 56 countries and had 61 separate events.

The Games in Christchurch have particular significance as they have been dedicated as a Memorial Games to the memory of those firefighters killed in action in New York on September the 11th and elsewhere around the world.

The Farr Association is proud to be able to support this event by providing a fleet of Farr 6000s for the sailing events. Many thanks to the more than ten owners who have kindly offered their boats for the Games.

Milang - Goolwa Race, South Australia 27th January

The Annual Milang - Goolwa race is the major event on the South Australia trailer yachting calender and attracts a huge fleet, this year over 350 yachts.

Another Milang - Goolwa event has taken place what can I say! The sail or motor over on Saturday was rather interesting. We on Waituna missed the 8am start and got away at 9-15 motored to Rat Island then sailed to the lake towards Milang to have the wind drop so we put up the Spinnaker till that ceased to work. We motored some more then sailed till we eventually ended up at Milang and managed to push ourselves into the Reeds. It was a hot day with some rain late in the evening

On race day we had no wind to 25 knots plus. Sailing across the lake was a bit frustrating to say the least. The starts were a bit of a lottery, as the wind seemed to die, as one got closer to the start line. Division 4 were left sitting on the line for about 30 minutes before the wind slowly built up and they were moving. The boats on the lake were also having trouble about making the right decision as to where they should be to get the advantage of getting through the gate at Point Sturt. The frustration was seen on some skipper's faces as some of the division 3 boats caught up with division 2 boats. Even more frustrating was that Boojum was the fastest boat in division 5 and caught and passed Waituna at Clayton. Well-done Mick. The other interesting fact was I think that of all Farr's started with Genoa's, those that changed to a jib early had a distinct advantage.

It was great to see Capricorn Dream from Mount Gambier raced by Gary and Betty Smythe were the third Farr and 14th in division 4.

There were the usual stories of if I had done this or that I would have done better. Everything can be solved in hindsight usually discussed after cleansing ale or a glass of some other beverage. Not the best Farr weather!

Peter Roodhouse, South Australia
