A Clean sweep for Aphrodite at Aviemore
This years Aviemore was all Otago's in the Farr 6000s
with Rob English in Aphrodite taking the Classic in
the Farr 6000 class and the A division, and winning
the C division in the NZTYA Championships.
Rob was very closely followed in all events by Alan
Sutherland (Hot C Air) and Colin Moodie (Stix &
Strings).
The 7500 class saw Sweetalker followed by Kevin McFall
(Club Med) and Laurence Smith (Endeavour) in the Classic.
Sadly the Christchurch Farr Fleet was a little underepresented
this year (myself included). If anyone has photos from
the event I would be happy to post them.

Christchurch Yachts Lead The Pack At Aviemore
(TYPBC Press Release)
“Unleashed” sailed by Bruce Laing, took
out line honours and led a Christchurch trio with “Chocolate
Fish”, Wayne Cooke, snapping at his transom, and
Darryl Pender on “Stealth” not far astern,
in the 15th annual Meridian Energy Aviemore Classic
yacht race at Lake Aviemore over Labour weekend. Neill
Chandler and crew, of Timaru sailing “Lyric”
a Noelex 22, made the most of the perfect sailing conditions
taking out 1st overall and 1st in B division, and also
winning overall in B division of the Meridian Energy
New Zealand trailer Yacht championships.
Other Christchurch yachts sailed well with Lyn Scott
on “Icebreaker” winning D Division in the
Meridian Energy Aviemore Classic and Jim Paterson on
“Crickle” taking out the Aquarius 22 National
Champs.
A series of 4 races were sailed on Saturday with the
Meridian Energy Aviemore Classic on Sunday making up
the 5th race for those entered in the championships,
this seemed to be a winning format with the largest
fleet (50) for many years sailing the entire series
and over 80 in the Meridian Energy Aviemore Classic.
Racing started on Saturday in 12 to 15 knot winds which
steadily increased in strength to over 25knots by the
fourth race, causing one yacht to lose it’s mast
and several incidents of gear damage, a couple of men
overboard, the odd collision, much reefing of sails
and several withdrawals capped of a very exciting first
day.
Richard Hawkins from Dunedin on “Wavetrain”
blitzed the field in the Noelex 25 Champs, placing first
in every race, while Kevin Brown in “Cabernet”
and Neill Monk in “Percolator” , also from
Dunedin took 2nd and 3rd.
A lighter but very cold breeze welcomed competitors
on Sunday for the Meridian Energy Aviemore Classic long
distance race, this resulted in some very close racing
culminating in success for “Lyric”, and
Neill Monk in “Percolator” 1st on handicap.
One boat was dismasted in a start line incident, but
generally the racing conditions were excellent and few
problems were experienced apart from a few boats finishing
on the wrong side of the finish line.
Socially the weekend was a great success with a rock
band playing in the Marquee set up at the Otematata
harbour on Friday night, a fun race prizegiving in the
marquee on Saturday night and the main prizegiving on
Sunday night at the local Hotel. The major prize of
the weekend was a 2.1 metre Himme inflatable dinghy
valued at $1000, the winner of this is determined by
a lucky draw of the competitors.
The format of this event, with it’s mix of serious
and not so serious racing, family participation, and
socializing is unique in New Zealand and it is now the
largest Trailer yacht event on the calendar, the location
and layout of the lake and town are probably the most
suitable venue for an event of this type while the long
time support of the events sponsors make it all happen.
